with Robert Birch and Mark Stevens from Salt Spring Island
Every Sunday morning from 8 to 10:30 am, representatives from 10 neighbourhood families gather to garden together on Salt Spring Island. Their planning and labour yields enough food to feed their families. The Echo Valley Community Garden or “Dirt Church” started in 2020 and is now in its 4th season.
They are a diverse group of community-loving islanders: single moms and retirees, renters and homeowners, master and novice gardeners, writers, bakers, and counsellors; social activists shoveling manure alongside corporate executives. They all love to cook. They swap recipes as they weed and gossip about local politics as they harvest. While not always easy, the last few years have taught them that, in the end, we need one another.
The Dirt Church group has learned and evolved quite a bit during their time together and will be coming to our September meeting to share what they have learned with us! See you on September 11th at 7pm for Dirt Church!
